This tour starts at Beaulieu Lodge in Richmond KZN and after a substantial breakfast we leave Richmond and head for Naude’s Nek pass via the twisty Umkomaas valley. Halfway up the Naude’s Nek pass we stop for a picnic under the shade of some old gum trees. After lunch we head on and take a gentle ride down the Naude’s Nek pass itself, taking in the spectacular scenery and rolling hills. We arrive at our overnight stop at Hannalie Nel’s guest farm nestled in the Rhodes valley where Hannalie serves a traditional farmers dinner. Early the next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we leave the Rhodes area and head off to Addo stopping at Fort Beaufort for lunch and to stretch our legs. From Fort Beaufort to Addo is a quick 3 hour ride where we arrive in the late afternoon, but not too late for a refreshing swim in “Die Ou Drif “ swimming pool before settling down for the evening meal.
The following morning after breakfast we have a short ride to the start of the Baviaans Kloof stopping at Patensie’s “Padlangs “roadside coffee shop for morning tea. After tea we commence the amazing ride through the Baviaans Kloof. Home to hundreds of Baboons (from where the area gets its name) and there are also plenty of other species of game to be seen whilst taking in the spectacular scenery. After negotiating 47 river crossings (varying in depth from ankle deep to knee deep) we arrive at Hestelle’s guest farm “Damse Drif“ where Hestelle organizes a delicious braai and plenty of good ‘Boere Kos’ waiting for us. After breakfast we ride out of the the Baviaans stopping at Uniondale for morning tea. Thereafter we head for Sedgefield taking in the beautifull Prince Albert Pass en route.
At Sedgefield we book in at “The Forest Lodge“and stay there for two nights. During our rest day the ladies have a choice of sleeping in, going to Knysna for some shopping or joining the riders for a day ride to the Swartberg mountains and riding to the area known as “De Hel“ or Gamkaskloof . The next day we start our homeward bound journey but the tour is not over yet. We follow the beautiful old road from Knysna to Port Elizabeth where we stop for lunch. After lunch we head for Port Alfred where we stay at an old Victorian hotel “The Royal Prince Alfred “.
The next morning we leave for Qolora mouth on the Transkei coast, crossing the ferry over the Kie River, where we stop for the night. The next day is the final leg of this amazing journey and we head for home via Umtata and Kokstad. We arrive back at Richmond around about 15h30 where we say our goodbyes and ride off home with a camera full of pictures and a host of memories.
